Fantasy Premier League Tips: Defenders for Gameweek 10

John O’Shea

Voodoo times for the Black Cats at the moment. Conceding ten goals in the last two matches pointed out there is lot of work to be done. After a humiliating 8-0 defeat to high flying Southampton, dejavu struck again last weekend against Arsenal where two defensive errors made Alexis Sanchez punishing them. The former Manchester United center back is nowhere leading his new team at the back as week by week they rather look extra wobbly. Moreover, Gus Poyet has signed former Lyon and France star Anthony Reveillere on a free-transfer to add more leadership at the back. However, no defenders from Sunderland including the Red Devils star are currently a good choice for the dream team.

Chris Smalling

The England International returned from injury in style to help Red Devils back line previous weekend against The Blues. His presence clearly made the home side’s defense more composed and balanced. A number of crucial interventions plus tackles made him a highly rated player in the entertaining match. Yet, his medical history with his new club is quite awful. The return of Phil Jones will clearly result in a starting lineup battle. Nevertheless, with solid performances like last weekend, the former Fulham defender will be a good addition in the fantasy premier league, if he maintains consistency.

Ryan Bertrand

The former Chelsea full-back is evolving as one of the best young defenders in the premier league. The Saints are rampaging with great attacking flair and cementing their back line impressively. In addition, Ronald Koeman’s side hold the best defensive record compared to other 20 teams in the league with a total of five clean sheets. As equal to their offensive players, Ryan Bertrand and his defensive partners are doing their job at the back exceptionally well. The 25-year old left back who has scored one goal this season, is not shy of driving upfront and whipping in dangerous crosses for his strikers. The pace he comprises greatly helps him switching from offensive back to defensive, maintaining good positioning. A quality full back that deserves a spot in your dream team!

Star Picks

Leighton Baines – A magnificent left back who loves bursting along the flank to help in attack. The England international has six assists so far.

Luke Shaw – The big money signing of Manchester United is without a doubt one of the best young talents. Last weekend, he performed quite decent at the back.

Branislav Ivanovic – The Serbian defender is an essential part of the Blues back line. He has found the back of the net two times, single assist and total of three clean sheets this season.

Martin Skrtel – The Slovakia was more organized last weekend against Hull City. His goal scoring record last season makes him a decent option for defense.

Nathaniel Clyne – The young full back is a vital part of Southampton’s defense and has five clean sheets. In addition, he has one goal and assist to his name.
