Super Sunday is all about the Manchester derby this weekend as the two Manchester giants meet at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City are looking to rebound from their 2-1 loss at West Ham last weekend which saw them slip to six points behind league leaders Chelsea. Meanwhile, Manchester United are as low as 8th in the Premier League table following their creditable 1-1 draw with Chelsea. However, its back-to-back draws for Louis van Gaal’s side who are now three points outside the top four.
Two attack-minded sides make for an interesting prospect in the 13:30 kickoff.
The home side has no known injury problems and none of their players are suspended, giving manager Manuel Pellegrini a full squad to pick from.
The same cannot be said for the visitors though as Manchester United still have a number of injuries to deal with. On the positive front, both Radamel Falcao and Phil Jones should be available again after missing last weekend’s game with injuries. Wayne Rooney is also back following his three-game suspension.
However, midfielders Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard are both still injured. Valencia had been in the first-team when fit, whilst Lingard started the season opener in which he picked up an ankle injury that has ruled him out ever since. Centre-backs Jonny Evans and Paddy McNair are both out. The return of Phil Jones to partner Marcos Rojo could be van Gaal’s first choice centre-back partnership for the remainder of the season should they remain fit and available.
Sergio Aguero vs Phil Jones
Sergio Aguero has scored four goals in five Premier League matches against Manchester United. With the way that United have been defending so far this season you have to fancy the Manchester City striker to get on the scoresheet this weekend. Louis van Gaal’s side were able to hold a Diego Costa-less Chelsea to one goal but they face a different prospect in Aguero and David Silva this weekend. The Argentine is a match winner and Phil Jones hasn’t played too many games in the past few weeks.
David Silva vs Daley Blind
This should be an interesting battle in the centre of midfield if indeed David Silva is lined up there, behind Sergio Aguero. Daley Blind did a good job in keeping Cesc Fabregas relatively quiet a week ago and was much disciplined in sitting in front of his back four and not looking to influence the game. David Silva is very good at drifting into space and finding teammates from all angles so the Dutch midfielder will want to stay tight to him and do a man-to-man job to keep the Spaniard’s threat down to a minimum.
Angel Di Maria vs Pablo Zabaleta
Manchester United’s biggest threat since the transfer deadline has been Angel Di Maria. The Argentine has been involved in the majority of their goals since signing from Real Madrid. He’s quick, got great technique and fantastic passing ability. Pablo Zabaleta and co will need to be alert all game and keep tight on the Argentine if they want to prevent him getting involved in the goals once again.
