Land Over Sea, Go Maggie Go lead large Black-Eyed Susan field

The Grade II $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for three-year-old fillies headlines Pimlico’s Preakness eve card on Friday. It’s Race 11 on the program with an estimated post time of 4:50 p.m. EST.

#3 LAND OVER SEA (2-1) and #5 GO MAGGIE GO (5-2), the only two horses returning from the Kentucky Oaks two weeks ago, are the favorite and second choice over 12 others that still have something to prove (i.e. no graded stakes wins this year).

LAND OVER SEA had the inferior post in the Oaks (post 13, while GO MAGGIE GO was post 4), and gave up some ground around both turns while dropping back early and rallying late. LAND OVER SEA was no match for Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia, but her runner-up effort was striking.

GO MAGGIE GO was expected to show more early speed but was a bit slow out of the gate and was forced to steady in the opening strides. She wound up tucking in at the rail in midpack before coming out for a rally around the far turn, but unfortunately she was carried 7-wide into the stretch. She finished fourth, only about a length behind LAND OVER SEA, so I see these two as more-or-less even today.

It’s tough to envision either LAND OVER SEA or GO MAGGIE GO not winning, but in order to try and make a decent profit on this race we’ll dig a little deeper and look at some of the contenders for the minor awards.

#10 KINSLEY KISSES (6-1) will try routing for the first time for high-percentage trainer/jockey combo Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez. She was too wide to factor into the decision in the Beaumont Stakes last time out, but in her first two starts she hinted at serious potential. She’s not bred to get the added ground on the dam’s side (Forestry) but she is on the sire’s (Congrats, by A.P. Indy).

#14 MOM’S ON STRIKE (15-1) had a rough trip in her debut at six panels at the Fair Grounds before stretching out with success and breaking her maiden at Oaklawn last month for trainer Joe Sharp. It’ll be up to Joe Rocco Jr. to work out the right trip from this post and give this longshot a chance to hit the ticket.

The play: $2 trifecta 3,5/3,5/10,14, $1 trifecta 3,5/3,5,10,14/3,5,10,14 ($20)
