Belmont Park is the site for the Grade I, $400,000 Beldame Stakes, which takes place this Saturday. Seven fillies and mares will go postward at approximately 5:45 p.m. EST for the 10th race of the day. The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is the logical next target for the winner and like the Distaff, the Beldame distance is one-and-one-eighth miles. Belmont’s Saturday card is loaded with stakes races, so be sure to study it carefully before playing FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!
#2 FOREVER UNBRIDLED was installed as the even-money favorite, and her dirt route credentials stand out by comparison. Before she ran into Cavorting in her last two starts, FOREVER UNBRIDLED had strung together three straight graded stakes wins, one of which came under today’s pilot, Joel Rosario. She also suffered some very wide trips in her last two starts, one coming at Belmont in the Grade I Ogden Phipps, but still managed to hit the board each time. She is clearly fastest on paper, so it will take a significant improvement from one of FOREVER UNBRIDLED’s rivals to take her down in the Beldame.
#5 GOING FOR BROKE (6-1) should be rolling in the stretch under Irad Ortiz Jr. Before she ran into Songbird in the Grade I Alabama, GOING FOR BROKE had compiled three straight wins (albeit over lesser). Two of those came at Belmont, so we know she can handle the track. Chad Brown saddles this filly that has hit the exacta in all five of her lifetime starts. Being a three-year-old vs. elders, GOING FOR BROKE gets a three-pound weight break.
#4 PENWITH (10-1) is an interesting contender at a nice price. The switch to Javier Castellano could signify a return to her front-running tactics as she cuts back from the mile-and-a-quarter distance. With a lack of early speed on paper, PENWITH could easily make the lead today. PENWITH did break her maiden at Belmont at age two but has just one other win in 12 starts outside of Gulfstream Park, so be careful about betting her on top in this one.
The play: $5 exacta 2/4,5 ($10)
DFJ analysis: Break the bank for Javier Castellano ($11,000) this week. He should land an in-the-money finish in this race aboard PENWITH, and is practically guaranteed a similar finish in the Grade I Joe Hirsch Turf Classic with Flintshire earlier in the card. He also rides 7-2 shot Oiseau de Guerre in the Pilgrim Stakes for Chad Brown in addition to six other mounts.
