Economic Model is the ‘Bold’ pick at Belmont

The Grade III, $200,000 Bold Ruler Handicap is the feature race at Belmont this Saturday, and it drew a stacked field of 13. They’ll go seven furlongs on the main track when the latch is sprung around 5:19 p.m. EST. The Bold Ruler is scheduled as the ninth race on the program. Don’t forget to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#4 ECONOMIC MODEL (3-1, morning-line favorite) will be ridden by Joel Rosario for the first time as Irad Ortiz Jr. opted for STALLWALKIN’ DUDE (more on him later). ECONOMIC MODEL has run out of the exacta only once in his seven-race career. His effort in the seven-furlong King’s Bishop was a good one as he was second to the highly-talented Drefong, who set an easy tempo that day.

‘MODEL should get plenty of pace to close into in the Bold Ruler, as #1 GREEN GRATTO, #2 THREEFIVEINDIA and #3 GENTRIFY will all likely be contesting the lead from the inside. They may even be joined by #13 TOUCHOFSTARQUALITY (who drew a disadvantageous post as he cuts back so he won’t be on my tickets). ‘MODEL is 2-for-3 at Belmont, including his Easy Goer Stakes win from Belmont Stakes day, arguably his best performance to date. He’s training well for Chad Brown and will be a tough customer today.

#6 STALLWALKIN’ DUDE (7-2) holds the class edge off consecutive ITM finishes in the Grade I Vosburgh and Grade I Forego. He’s predominately been campaigned at six panels this year, but his third in the seven-furlong Forego was respectable and he has a 10-3-1-2 career record at the distance. Trainer David Jacobson has been on fire at the current meet (27%) and this horse should get a great setup; look for him late.

#8 AMI’S FLATTER (5-1) is an outsider that should be taken into account. His closing style puts him a good position to succeed here, and his career record at this distance is impeccable (3-for-3). John Velazquez has already won a race aboard this horse before, and he’s back for another attempt on Saturday.

The play: $2 exacta box 4/6/8, $3 exacta box 4/6, $1 exacta 4,6/8 ($20)

DFJ analysis: Joel Rosario ($9,000) seems like a good pickup for Saturday. He’ll supplement his mount in the Bold Ruler (ECONOMIC MODEL) with live longshot Rachel’s Temper in the Turnback The Alarm Stakes earlier in the card. He also has 5-1 Barton Holt in an allowance for Joe Sharp and 4-1 Sethary in a two-year-old maiden heat for Cristophe Clement. If Rosario makes the most of his five mounts on the program, he’ll be productive enough to justify the cost.
