The Grade I, $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks is the Sunday feature at Saratoga. The 1 1/8th-mile dirt heat attracted seven accomplished three-year-old fillies, including Kentucky Oaks and Acorn winner ABEL TASMAN. The CCA Oaks goes as Race 10 on an 11-race program; estimated post time is 6:18 p.m. EST. Be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!
#2 ABEL TASMAN (8-5, morning-line favorite) has established herself as the leader of her division and should cement that status on Sunday. She took advantage of a fast pace in the Kentucky Oaks to pull away with authority before making an inside bid to score in the Acorn. She’ll stretch back out to 1 1/8-miles while facing no significant new challengers. The only thing that might play against ABEL TASMAN is the lack of early speed signed on for this one. Mike Smith will have to get her in the game early, but ABEL TASMAN should prove best again.
#7 SALTY (5-2) has finished behind ABEL TASMAN in consecutive starts but had a much tougher go of it in the Kentucky Oaks and a wider trip in the Acorn. Still, it seems like the best horse won in each of those races. She’ll have to overcome yet another wide draw under Joel Rosario but should earn a significant share.
#6 BERNED (8-1) should help sweeten the exotics in her third start of the season. She scored convincingly two starts back before checking in a dull fifth in the Delaware Oaks. That effort can be forgiven as Delaware’s tiring surface doesn’t agree with everyone. She comes back fairly quickly for Graham Motion, who names Rajiv Maragh to ride.
The play: $4 exacta 2/6,7, $2 exacta 2/7, $2 trifecta 2/6,7/6,7 ($14)
DFJ analysis: Joel Rosario is primed for a solid Sunday at “The Spa,” as he has mounts in nine of 11 races. He’s live in almost every race, as five of his mounts are single-digit odds, including SALTY in the CCA Oaks. He has the call on favored Sweet August Lady for Chad Brown in Race 8.
