The Grade I, $300,000 Bing Crosby Stakes is the feature race at Del Mar this Saturday. A field of nine will go postward at approximately 9:03 p.m. EST for the ninth of 10 races. Defending sprint champion DREFONG leads the fray, though this is a highly-competitive contest. Be sure to consider this race carefully if you’re playing FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!
#2 DREFONG (5-2, morning-line favorite) hasn’t been seen since last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint, when he locked up the divisional Eclipse Award. Bob Baffert had DREFONG training toward the Dubai Golden Shaheen in March but the horse did not ship. The February/May work gap may signify that an injury occurred. DREFONG is probably the best horse on paper, but he may not be a great bet today. Mike Smith will be aboard.
#4 RANSOM THE MOON (7-2) won his first two starts in California before running into Danzing Candy in the San Carlos. That included a decisive score in May’s Grade II Kona Gold. He seems better-suited to the six-furlong distance of the Bing Crosby and projects to get a great stalking trip behind DREFONG and #3 ST. JOE BAY. Flavien Prat has the assignment.
#3 ST. JOE BAY (6-1) appears best of the three Peter Miller trainees (the others being #8 ROY H and #9 SOLID WAGER). He’ll make his first start since running fourth in the Golden Shaheen but figures off his last two at Santa Anita (both stakes wins). Kent Desormeaux will have the call once more.
#1 DENMAN’S CALL (20-1) will be rolling from the back of the pack. He upset the Triple Bend before struggling on the wet at Churchill and while going longer at Belmont. Tyler Baze stays in the irons.
The play: $4 exacta 4/2,3, $2 exacta 4/1 ($10)
DFJ analysis: Flavien Prat has eight mounts on Saturday, seven of which are 9-2 or below in odds. RANSOM THE MOON gives Prat a good shot to take the Bing Crosby, the day’s most lucrative race. He also has G. G. Ryder (2-1) in the California Dreamin’ Stakes.
