‘West’ looks best in Los Alamitos Derby

Los Alamitos race course has gathered eight colts to contest the Grade III, $200,000 Los Alamitos Derby this Saturday. Most of the participants have either skipped the Triple Crown series or developed too late but could still make a name for themselves before the year is over. The 1 1/8-mile Los Alamitos Derby goes as Race 7 on an eight-race program; scheduled post is 7:58 p.m. EST. As always, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#5 WEST COAST (9-5, morning-line favorite) looks to have these over a barrel for trainer Bob Baffert. Mike Smith gives up the mount in favor of Songbird in the Delaware Handicap, but Drayden Van Dyke takes over. WEST COAST was last seen dispatching his foes in Belmont’s Easy Goer Stakes. He gets back to his home state here and meets a similar field, though it’s technically a rise in class. The extra 1/16th of a mile looks to be within his scope as well, so bet with confidence.

#4 B SQUARED (12-1) has never missed the exacta in three tries on dirt, two in stakes company. He’ll get Corey Nakatani back aboard (Mario Gutierrez rides Irap in the Indiana Derby) off a second-place finish in the Affirmed Stakes to Battle of Midway. His speed figures put him in the hunt in the Los Alamitos Derby at a nice price.

#2 CISTRON (7-2) is primarily a turf horse but his lone stakes try on dirt was a winning one (Oaklawn’s Northern Spur). Tyler Baze regains the mount on the John Sadler trainee who may try to steal the race up front.

The play: $5 exacta 5/2,4 ($10)

DFJ analysis: Martin Garcia won’t be aboard WEST COAST but he has the call on probable favorite Midnight Cute for Baffert in Race 2. His other mount on the day is 2-1 Trickonomics in Race 3. Garcia is a solid, inexpensive option to round out the stable with.
