A field of 12 will assemble for the 35th running of the Grade I Arlington Million. The 1 1/4-mile turf classic goes as Race 11 on a 12-race program this Saturday at Arlington Park. Post time is estimated at 7:19 p.m. EST. A strong foreign contingent is present in the Arlington Million, as usual, but the locally-based horses are also high-quality. There are plenty of important jockeys shipping in for this one, so be sure to study this race carefully if you’re taking part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!
#5 DEAUVILLE (7-2, morning-line favorite) is foreign-based but has a win in the states; last year’s Belmont Derby. He was also a solid third in the Secretariat Stakes over this course last year before hitting the shelf. He’s been aggressively spotted by Aiden O’Brien lately, and while DEAUVILLE has just one win in five starts in 2017, he’s been close in races like the Group I Queen Anne at Royal Ascot. The 1 1/4-mile distance seems perfect for DEAUVILLE and he has the tactical speed to work out a good trip for himself. Sir Ryan Moore will fly in to ride.
#13 MEKHTAAL (9-2) will have world-class pilot Frankie Dettori aboard for his U.S. debut. He’s held his own with some of the best turfers in France and even won the Group I Prix d’Ispahan this May. MEKHTAAL will have to overcome a lackluster effort in the Group I Prince of Wales at Royal Ascot and a wide draw, but he might just be good enough.
#10 BEACH PATROL (5-1) seeks his first win in a calendar year (six starts) but looks best of the Americans. He was second in back-to-back Grade Is to begin the year before coming up empty in the Manhattan and being dueled into submission in the United Nations, both Grade I events. He’ll likely set the pace under Joel Rosario, who ships in to ride for Chad Brown.
#2 OSCAR NOMINATED (15-1) is a live longshot that lures Florent Geroux once more. He typically makes one late bid and lands small shares, but usually finds trouble that keeps him out of the winner’s circle. If Geroux can work out a clean trip, OSCAR NOMINATED could be a late force.
The play: $4 exacta 5/10,13, $2 exacta 5/2 ($10)
DFJ analysis: Joel Rosario has three mounts for Chad Brown on Saturday at Arlington, all of which are live. He has Grand Jete in the Grade I Beverly D, BEACH PATROL in the Arlington Million, and Lipstick City in the Grade III Pucker Up. Rosario also has favored Kitten’s Solution in Race 4.
