Weekly jockey review, 8/16/17; Prat’s producing at Del Mar

Time once again to review the action from the week in horse racing and see which jockeys are riding high at the moment. Saratoga and Del Mar are still in full swing, so we’ll focus our attention there. As always, be sure to use this information toward FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

Del Mar

Evin Roman’s lead has dwindled to just two victories over Flavien Prat, who won seven in the last five days. Roman, who is now at 22 wins on the meet, went to Emerald Downs on Sunday and won the Grade III Longacres Mile on Gold Rush Dancer. It was his first ever graded stakes triumph. Prat struck twice in stakes at Del Mar last week, taking the Solana Beach and Grade II Best Pal.

Rafael Bejarano had a five-win week, bolstered by a riding triple on Wednesday. He’s now at 16 wins on the meet.

Kent Desormeaux, not to be outdone, had a hat trick of his own on Sunday. He won six on the week, boosting his meet total to 13. Desormeaux sits fourth going into the new week, with Joe Talamo and Tyler Baze just behind at 11 wins apiece.

The Ortiz brothers are tied atop the Saratoga standings at 32 wins each. Irad won nine and recorded a stakes double, notching wins in the Grade II Saratoga Special and the Saratoga Dew. He also went to Arlington for Arlington Million day and won the Grade I Beverly D aboard Dacita. Jose won eight times, recording three-win days on Wednesday and Sunday in the process. He too went to Arlington and took a Grade I; the Secretariat Stakes atop Oscar Performance.

John Velazquez managed to create separation with Javier Castellano (24-18) for third on the strength of an eight-win week. Chief among Velazquez’s wins was the Grade II Adirondack on Pure Silver. Castellano won just twice last week but took the Quick Call Stakes aboard Blind Ambition.

Manny Franco won seven times and earned his third career Grade I victory in Saturday’s Fourstardave (World Approval).
