Sky’s the limit for Fifty Five in Sands Point

The Grade II, $400,000 Sands Point Stakes is the feature race at Belmont this Saturday. A field of 10 (with one MTO) three-year-old fillies has assembled for this 1 1/8th-mile grass test. Post time for the Sands Point, the ninth of 10 races on the day, is 5:45 p.m. EST. As always, be sure to check out FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#2 FIFTY FIVE (12-1) is one of three for preeminent turf trainer Chad Brown in the Sands Point. She’s the longest price of the trio but will be the top selection as she looks for her second stakes score in 2017. She won the Florida Oaks back in March before transferring to the Brown barn, where she’s 0-for-3 to this point. However, she got a very wide trip three starts back, ran into a force in New Money Honey two starts ago, and had too much to do late in the Lake George behind Proctor’s Ledge when last seen. She should appreciate the brief freshening while returning to what appears to be her best distance. Joe Bravo will climb aboard for the first time.

#10 INFLEXIBILITY (6-1) returns to the site of her maiden win after a three-race campaign at Woodbine. The Ontario-bred was competing in some of the toughest races offered to her breed, including the $1 million Queen’s Plate. She comes off a drop in class in the Wonder Where Stakes, beating five others at 4-5 going 1 1/4-miles. The Sands Point represents a class hike but INFLEXIBILITY lures Javier Castellano, who’s off to a great start at Belmont.

#6 UNI (3-1, morning-line favorite) has hit the board in both the Belmont Oaks and Lake Placid since coming stateside. She aims for her first U.S. win today at a distance that seems to suit her. UNI might have won the 1 1/8-mile Lake Placid but for a wide trip; Irad Ortiz Jr. will have to guard against that on Saturday.

The play: $5 win/place 2 ($10)

DFJ analysis: Joe Bravo and his six mounts are available at a bargain price on Saturday. The veteran rider has the call on two live mounts for George Weaver (5-1 Daddy is a Legend in Race 5 and 3-1 favorite Stormy Alexis in Race 6) before getting on 5-1 Harlan Punch in Race 8. Bravo’s biggest assignment on Saturday is live longshot FIFTY FIVE in the Grade II Sands Point.

Irad Ortiz Jr. rides in all 10 on Saturday and has the call on favored UNI in the Sands Point. Ortiz is the best of the ‘big budget’ options at Belmont.
