Belmont selections, jockey analysis for 10/28/17

There’s a quartet of stakes races at Belmont Park for their closing Saturday card; we’ll discuss two of them here. There’s plenty of money to be made if you bet the right way. There’s also ample opportunity to pad your Breeders’ Cup bankroll through FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

Belmont Race 7

The Grade III Athenia Stakes

#7 OFF LIMITS (2-1, morning-line favorite) is 3-for-4 this year and 4-2-1-0 at Belmont all-time. She was last seen dominating the Noble Damsel, the logical prep for the Athenia, albeit over just four others. She’s worthy of favoritism as she’s fast enough and classy enough to win this race. It would take a big effort from one of her adversaries to best her and Joel Rosario, but it is possible.

#3 MY IMPRESSION (8-1) is the most appealing upset candidate. She took care of business as the favorite in the One Dreamer at Kentucky Downs after settling for second in two straight starts before running off the board in the Grade I Diana. The 1 1/16th-mile turf trip suits her to a tee (5-for-9) and she’ll get Jose Ortiz aboard.

#1 ELYSEA’S WORLD (5-1) seems to want more ground than this but she’ll be rolling late for a small share. Javier Castellano takes over.

The play: $4 exacta 7/1,3, $4 win 3 ($12)

Belmont Race 10

The Awad Stakes

#6 WAR CHEST (9-5, morning-line favorite) makes sense off his debut victory, as he stormed past his competition five-wide. However, he and Jose Lezcano had a very fast pace to close into; there’s no guarantee they’ll get another today. As a result, he could be vulnerable at a short price.

#1 WAY EARLY (6-1) closed into a moderate pace and pulled away with authority in his debut under Joel Rosario. He rallied smartly despite fanning out to the six-path in the stretch. WAY EARLY should get a great setup today while not losing much ground on the turn.

#4 BOURBON CURRENCY (5-1) has yet to race beyond six furlongs but took to the turf with aplomb last time. He’s training well for his return off a brief layoff and maintains Rajiv Maragh.

#2 THERAPIST (8-1) and #9 DIVINE ENTRY (8-1) are fast enough to compete for the minor awards. THERAPIST is one of two with multiple wins and the only entrant with a prior stakes victory (Laurel Futurity). Irad Ortiz Jr. picks up the assignment.

DIVINE ENTRY lost to BOURBON CURRENCY two-back but just broke his maiden last time out. He wasn’t Irad Ortiz’s choice but he attracts Jose Ortiz.

The play: $1 trifecta 1,6/1,4,6/1,2,4,6,9, $1 trifecta 1,6/1,6/2,4,9 ($18)

DFJ analysis: OFF LIMITS and WAY EARLY give Joel Rosario a great chance to accumulate points on Saturday. He has seven mounts in the body of the field at Belmont, four of which are in stakes. Look for Rosario to have a very solid day filled with in-the-money finishes.
