Santa Anita Park plays host to the Grade I, $300,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship this Saturday. The six-furlong dirt sprint drew a field of six with Breeders’ Cup aspirations. Going as Race 6 on a 10-race program, post time for the race is approximately 6:02 p.m. EST. Study the entire Santa Anita card carefully if you’re playing FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!
#6 ROY H (8-5, morning-line favorite) was an impressive winner of Belmont’s Grade II True North Stakes two-back. He was second when last seen in the Grade I Bing Crosby at Del Mar but was probably best. He was forced to go extremely wide around a riderless Drefong while RANSOM THE MOON received an ideal inside trip. ROY H has enough speed to force the pace early under new pilot Kent Desormeaux and the stamina to hold on late.
#4 AMERICAN ANTHEM (3-1) became a force on the three-year-old sprint scene earlier this year before running into Practical Joke and next-out winner Takaful in the Grade I H. Allen Jerkens. His effort in that heat, however, was respectable as he raced wide on the far turn. AMERICAN ANTHEM has drilled nothing but bullets for Bob Baffert since then, but the cutback in distance may not be to his liking.
#1 RANSOM THE MOON (5-2) was the beneficiary of ROY H’s troubled trip in the Bing Crosby but has merit. He’s won three of his last four races, two at the graded level, since switching to Flavien Prat. He seems to prefer stalking but may have his hand forced early from the rail. It will be interesting to watch the early chess match between RANSOM THE MOON, #5 MR. HINX and ROY H. Jockey choices will be crucial.
The play: $5 exacta 6/1,4 ($10)
DFJ analysis: Kent Desormeaux is poised to have a big Saturday at Santa Anita. He rides in seven races, including the Santa Anita Sprint Championship, where he’s atop favored ROY H. Other possible winners include Ima Take Charge (Race 1), Blackjackcat (Race 2, the Obviously Mile), and Sappho (Race 5).
