Bullards Alley is the class of the Allen Jerkens

The $100,000 Allen Jerkens Stakes, a two-mile turf endurance test, is the most lucrative race at Gulfstream Park this Saturday. A field of eight will line up at the gate at approximately 2:05 p.m. EST for the day’s fifth race. The unique turf heat offers all kinds of wagering opportunities, and it also carries crucial points toward FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#7 BULLARDS ALLEY (7-5, morning-line favorite) takes a precipitous class drop after vying in two straight Grade Is. He upset the Canadian International two-back before failing to hit the board in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. BULLARDS ALLEY hasn’t accomplished much outside Woodbine this year but may simply be better than these and should be able to negotiate the distance. He’s imposing enough on speed figures. Paco Lopez picks up the mount.

#1 INFINITE WISDOM (9-2) will likely draw the “wise” money as he attempts to rebound off a dismal effort in the Grade III Sycamore last time out. Prior to that he’d hit the board in four straight, including a victory in the 1 5/8-mile John’s Call Stakes. INFINITE WISDOM has been in the money in all three starts at Gulfstream, though he still seeks his first win. Jose Ortiz has the assignment.

#3 GOLD SHIELD (7-2) steps up off a runaway allowance win at Aqueduct going 1 3/8-miles for Shug McGaughey. That snapped a six-race losing streak for GOLD SHIELD, who fits with these on speed figures but not so much on class. Like many in the field, two miles may be outside his scope, though he is very well-bred. Manny Franco maintains the mount.

The play: $4 exacta 7/1,3, $2 exacta 1/7 ($10)

DFJ analysis: Jose Ortiz should waste little time getting back into the winner’s circle this Saturday. His first of seven mounts comes in Race 2, and it’s 2-1 favorite Sinatra. He’ll ride two other horses at single-digit odds today in addition to INFINITE WISDOM in the Allen Jerkens.
