Bal Harbour seeks third straight stakes score in Mucho Macho Man

The $100,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes is the featured race at Gulfstream Park this Saturday. Though it doesn’t carry any points toward the Kentucky Derby, the one-mile dirt stake is still an important stepping stone toward the first Saturday in May. A field of eight three-year-old colts will line up at the starting gate at about 4:37 p.m. EST. The Mucho Macho Man is the 10th of 11 scheduled races. As always, feel free to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#4 BAL HARBOUR (9-2) has a good shot at posting a minor upset in the Mucho Macho Man. His last start came at Gulfstream and it was a win in a sloppy renewal of the Smooth Air Stakes. BAL HARBOUR has now won two straight stakes, both at one mile, and holds a 3-2-1-0 record over this course. He’ll also get a key rider change to John Velazquez, who is firing at 39% with trainer Todd Pletcher over the last two months.

#3 DAK ATTACK (9-5, morning-line favorite) is a perfect 2-for-2 lifetime but hasn’t raced since August. He also has yet to race beyond seven furlongs, the distance of his flashy Ellis Park Juvenile win in which he closed into a fast pace. However, he must be respected off his solid works at Gulfstream as well as his speed figures. Robby Albarado keeps the mount.

#6 MASK (2-1) has just one race under his belt; a speedy maiden win at Belmont going 6 1/2 furlongs. Chad Brown has this colt training steadily for his first start since October and Javier Castellano stays aboard. However, his pedigree doesn’t cry out for routes, so he could be a shaky proposition going this far.

The play: $6 win 4, $3 exacta box 3/4, $2 exacta 3,4/6 ($16)

DFJ analysis: Robby Albarado should make his Saturday sojourn to Gulfstream worthwhile. He has four mounts in total, all trained by Dale Romans and all at single digit odds. DAK ATTACK is Albarado’s highest-profile mount and could win the Mucho Macho Man Stakes as the favorite.
