Three-year-old fillies take center stage at Santa Anita in Saturday’s Grade II, $200,000 Summertime Oaks. The 1 1/16th-mile event drew a field of six, led by recent Kentucky Oaks contender CHOCOLATE MARTINI. Post time for the Summertime Oaks, Race 6 of 11 on the day, is 6:00 p.m. EST. #5 CHOCOLATE MARTINI (9-5, morning-line favorite) lures Flavien Prat for her first West Coast assignment. She was unable to keep up with Monomoy Girl in the Kentucky Oaks last time out but gets significant class relief in the Summertime Oaks, which looks soft for a Grade II this year. If she runs back to her previous two efforts at the Fair Grounds, one of which was a Fair Grounds Oaks win, she’ll be hard to hold off here. The versatile filly has trained exceptionally in preparation for this start.
#6 OLLIE’S CANDY (7-2) is an intriguing new face in this division. She’s 2-for-2 to start her career, but both of those wins came sprinting on synthetic dirt at Golden Gate. It seems like a big ask for her to handle this class hike in addition to a distance increase and surface change, but the ease of her first two wins stamp her as a contender, and she’s got the pedigree to manage this assignment. Kent Desormeaux sees fit to climb aboard.
#4 ZUSHA (10-1) outran her odds on debut at two at Del Mar before coming back as a maiden winner in her first start at three at Santa Anita. She’s raced once since that initial victory, settling for third after dueling early. She can definitely handle this course, but like OLLIE’S CANDY, this will be her first start around two turns. Drayden Van Dyke rides this Congrats filly with upside.
The play: $4 exacta 5/4,6, $2 exacta 6/5 ($10)
DFJ analysis: Flavien Prat has seven mounts in total this Saturday and rides three of the shortest-priced favorites on the program. River Boyne (3-5) figures in the Rainbow Stakes (Race 3), while flashy maiden winner Anonymity returns in Race 4. Favored CHOCOLATE MARTINI is Prat’s ride in the Summertime Oaks.
