Hunt seeks repeat score in Eddie Read

Some of California’s best turfers take the spotlight in the Grade II, $250,000 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar. The 1 1/8-mile event drew a field of 11. Post time for the Eddie Read, Race 8 on a nine-race program, is 8:30 p.m. EST. In addition to watching and wagering, feel free to try out FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#7 HUNT (3-1) showed no signs of rust when taking the Shoemaker Mile off the bench last time out. The added distance should be no problem for him, as he took this 1 1/8-mile event last year. Flavien Prat timed his rally perfectly in the 2017 Eddie Read, and he projects to get a good setup today. HUNT loves this Del Mar turf course, as he’s 8-3-2-0 on it all-time. He’ll be the pick to post a mild upset based on the morning-line odds.

#5 SHARP SAMURAI (7-2) is a sensible alternative with Gary Stevens in the irons. He won two starts here over the summer, including the 1 1/8-mile Del Mar Derby. SHARP SAMURAI carries a 5-4-0-0 record at the distance into the Eddie Read, and he aced his comeback allowance prep last month. He’s versatile enough to prompt the pace or lay back if he needs to.

#9 ITSINTHEPOST (5-2, morning-line favorite) has been among the leaders in this division for the last couple of years but has struggled over this turf course. He seeks his first win at Del Mar in try number 10 in the Eddie Read. However, it’s hard to toss a horse that regularly posts competitive speed figures and has won four graded stakes in 2018 alone. Tyler Baze regains the mount after missing ITSINTHEPOST’s Whittingham win due to injury.

The play: $2 exacta box 5/7/9, $2 exacta 7/5,9 ($16)

DFJ analysis: Flavien Prat is once again a smart choice in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game. Five of his six mounts on Sunday are priced at 4-1 or below. That includes HUNT in the Grade II Eddie Read. His other call is Bombard (6-1), who breaks from post 14 in a contentious renewal of the Wickerr Stakes.
