Stacked field of stakes sprinters set for Bing Crosby

Some of California’s best sprinters will be on display in Saturday’s Grade I, $300,000 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar. The six-furlong event drew a field of 11. Post time for the Bing Crosby, Race 9 of 10, is estimated for 9:00 p.m. EST. As always, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#4 AMERICAN ANTHEM (5-2) has mainly campaigned at seven furlongs but shouldn’t be compromised by today’s distance. He owns a maiden win going six panels and was third in last year’s Santa Anita Sprint Championship. AMERICAN ANTHEM has begun 2018 with consecutive wins, highlighted by a San Carlos score last time out in which he chased a fast pace. Mike Smith has options on this versatile Bob Baffert trainee, which is important in a crowded field. He’ll probably stalk the pace before pouncing in the lane. AMERICAN ANTHEM is the one to beat in the Bing Crosby on recent form.

#3 ROY H (2-1, morning-line favorite) is the reigning divisional champ but exits a March layoff. He hasn’t raced since finishing an admirable third in the Dubai Golden Shaheen behind Mind Your Biscuits and X Y Jet, both of whom have bounced back strongly since returning stateside. ROY H’s credentials speak for themselves, as he’s won four of his last six starts on dirt. He might have made it five for six, but an errant Drefong carried him six-wide in last year’s rendition of the Bing Crosby. Despite the long layoff, ROY H must be respected in this spot. Kent Desormeaux rides.

#5 RANSOM THE MOON (6-1) has hit the board just once since that fortunate win in this race last year, but that’s not to say he’s untalented. RANSOM THE MOON won and placed in two other stakes last year. He’s been rested since an unsuccessful route attempt in the Met Mile in June and has been drilling exceptionally for this. Flavien Prat has the call.

#9 EDWARDS GOING LEFT (10-1) has longshot appeal despite a March layoff. He’s never won a Grade I but has hit the board in his last two tries, including the Triple Bend last time out. EDWARDS GOING LEFT should have plenty of pace to close into and gets a rider upgrade to Drayden Van Dyke.

The play: $6 exacta 4/3, $3 exacta 4/5,9, $4 exacta 3/4 ($16)

DFJ analysis: Kent Desormeaux has six mounts on Saturday, all of which are single-digit odds. Two of those assignments are program favorites, including ROY H in the Bing Crosby. What a View (5-1) looks live in the California Dreamin’ Stakes as well.
