Del Mar’s signature summer event, the Grade I, $1 million Pacific Classic, takes place this Saturday. A field of eight, led by potential division champ ACCELERATE, will line up for the 1 1/4-mile heat. Post time for the Pacific Classic, Race 10 of 11 on a stakes-laden program, is 9:43 p.m. EST. In addition to watching and wagering, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!
#5 ACCELERATE (8-5, morning-line favorite) is by far the fastest horse in the race. If he repeats his Gold Cup score at Santa Anita from late May, no one will be able to touch him. ACCELERATE loves Del Mar (5-3-0-1) and has excelled at today’s distance (3-2-0-1). Anything can happen in a horse race, but there’s no logical reason to bet against ACCELERATE in the Pacific Classic. Joel Rosario ships in for the assignment, replacing the injured Victor Espinoza.
#2 DR. DORR (6-1) was soundly beaten by ACCELERATE in the Gold Cup three starts ago. After that defeat he produced a clunker in the Suburban at Belmont, then shipped back west and ran second in the San Diego Handicap over this course. If DR. DORR can return to his efforts from earlier in the year that saw him win three straight (including the Grade II Californian), he has the strongest case in the field for second. Joe Talamo maintains the mount.
#3 PRIME ATTRACTION (8-1) is not the most consistent runner in the Pacific Classic field, but he does love Del Mar. He’s undefeated in two starts over the dirt and exits a third-place finish in the Eddie Read on grass. In his last start on a fast strip, PRIME ATTRACTION was within two lengths of ACCELERATE with a wide journey. He’s not out of the place discussion by any means. Kent Desormeaux will be aboard.
The play: $6 exacta 5/2, $4 exacta 5/3 ($10)
DFJ analysis: Joel Rosario should make his trip out west worthwhile. He has eight mounts in all, with his best win chances scheduled later on the card. He’ll ride three straight favorites, starting with Colonia in the Del Mar Oaks (Race 8), Game Winner in Race 9, and ACCELERATE in the Pacific Classic.
