Almanaar can give Brown first Shadwell Turf Mile score

Some of the best grass horses in country have assembled for Saturday’s Grade I, $1,000,000 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland. An overflow field of 16 has been entered. Post time for the Shadwell Turf Mile is 5:49 p.m. EST; it’s the 10th of 11 scheduled races. Don’t forget to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

There are few Grade I turf races that trainer Chad Brown hasn’t won, but the Shadwell Turf Mile is one of them. #11 ALMANAAR (9-2), along with #9 ANALYZE IT (9-2), give him a good shot at the top prize in this year’s renewal.

ALMANAAR makes his third start off a long layoff on Saturday. He won his comeback at Belmont before settling for second in the Arlington Million last time out. The cutback in distance in the Shadwell Turf Mile could benefit him. Javier Castellano picks up the assignment.

ANALYZE IT has had the lead in the stretch in each of his last three starts but has faded to second in each time. Cutting back a quarter-mile today could aid his cause, as might a return to Keeneland, where he won his only career start with ease. John Velazquez has the call.

#5 HEART TO HEART (7-2, morning-line favorite) has some concerns to address, making him a poor favorite, but he would not be a surprise. He wasn’t able to make the lead after a poor start in the Fourstardave last time out and faded to sixth. Prior to that he raced off the lead in the Shoemaker Mile and settled for place. One must wonder how HEART TO HEART will respond if VOODOO SONG once again outpaces him and he can’t make the lead. HEART TO HEART loves this course (6-2-3-0) but that may not be enough for him to get the win. Julien Leparoux will be in the irons.

#14 BOUND FOR NOWHERE (15-1) would be a serious overlay at 15-1. His Tourist Mile win wasn’t incredibly fast but it was his first try at a route, and it came over the quirky Kentucky Downs course. It was also his first start since running a game third in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee over at Ascot. BOUND FOR NOWHERE is a spotless 2-for-2 over this course and once again has the services of Julio Garcia.

The play: $4 exacta 11/5,9,14 ($12)

DFJ analysis: Javier Castellano rides in seven races at Keeneland this Saturday. Of those seven mounts, three are favored. That includes Quidura (2-1) in the Grade I First Lady. ALMANAAR, Castellano’s mount in a wide-open renewal of the Shadwell Turf Mile, is a solid option.
