Longshot looms in wide-open Raven Run

The Grade II, $250,000 Raven Run Stakes is the feature at Keeneland this Saturday. The seven-furlong sprint for fillies drew an oversubscribed field of 16, including two also-eligibles. It goes as the ninth of 10 races on the day, with post time estimated for 5:30 p.m. EST. In addition to watching and wagering, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#16 SHE’S A GYPSY (30-1) has won her last three starts in a row. She started her streak in late November with an effortless one-mile maiden win at Churchill Downs. After a lengthy layoff, she returned in August at the N2L level to win at Ellis Park before an N2X victory at Churchill, where she earned her best speed figure to date. SHE’S A GYPSY is trending in the right direction and has a nose for the wire. Her pedigree says she’ll appreciate the seven-furlong trip too. Corey Lanerie is the listed rider on this live longshot. She just has to draw in off the also-eligible list.

#9 MOONSHINE MEMORIES (3-1, morning-line favorite) has the best speed figures in the field but hasn’t really progressed since her two-year-old season when she won the Grade I Del Mar Debutante and Chandelier. She was no match for Dream Tree when last seen in the Prioress, but that rival is off to bigger and better things in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in two weeks’ time. MOONSHINE MEMORIES does not appear to have lost her competitive edge just yet. She’ll be ridden by Mike Smith on Saturday for the first time. She just may not be a great bet at 3-1 or less.

#6 KELLY’S HUMOR (6-1) is 0-for-5 this year but has hit the board four times, thrice against stakes company. She passed several rivals late to grab third in the Test last time out, her best effort of 2018 figure-wise. However, she’ll switch from Joel Rosario to the ice-cold Brian Hernandez Jr. (2-for-49 through Thursday at Keeneland).

The play: $5 win/place 16 or $8 exacta 9/6, $2 exacta 6/9 ($10)

DFJ analysis: Sooner or later, Corey Lanerie (2-for-59 through Thursday at Keeneland) has to turn it around. Saturday could help him round back into form, especially if SHE’S A GYPSY scratches into the Raven Run. He’ll ride in seven races, and four of his mounts are 5-1 or below on the morning-line.
