Caribou Club can claw past the competition in Seabiscuit

The Grade II, $200,000 Seabiscuit Handicap puts turf runners in the spotlight at Del Mar this Saturday. The 1 1/16th-mile event drew a full and evenly-matched field of 12. The Seabiscuit goes as Race 7 of 9, and post time is estimated for 6:30 p.m. EST. As always, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#1 CARIBOU CLUB (6-1) capped off a four-wins-in-five-starts run with a Connaught Cup victory at Woodbine back in June. He appeared to start tailing off with consecutive out-of-the-money finishes, but he was facing some tougher competition in the King Edward and Del Mar Mile. Yet CARIBOU CLUB rebounded in short order in the Eddie D last time out, flying late for third. The stretchout shouldn’t impact him negatively, as he’s done well going one mile in the past. The well-traveled son of City Zip is a respectable 4-1-0-2 over this course. CARIBOU CLUB will be the top pick in the Seabiscuit as he retains Joe Talamo

#7 SYNCHRONY (9-2, morning-line favorite) intrigues shipping in from the east coast for Michael Stidham. After a successful season at the Fair Grounds, he swept a pair of turf stakes at Monmouth as well. SYNCHRONY may have been in too deep in the Shadwell Turf Mile last time out. Joe Bravo sees fit to fly in for this assignment; his mount looks well-spotted.

#3 ANN ARBOR EDDIE (8-1) is just 1-for-8 this year but consistently runs figures good enough to compete against these. He was particularly strong at Del Mar this year, winning one high-level allowance and placing in another. ANN ARBOR EDDIE drilled sharply for this and keeps Mario Gutierrez in the saddle.

The play: $2 exacta 1,7/1,3,7, $1 exacta box 1/7 ($10)

DFJ analysis: Mario Gutierrez looks like a solid pickup this Saturday. He’ll have the call on seven different horses at Del Mar, five of them priced at single-digits on the morning-line. ANN ARBOR EDDIE gives him a good chance at a piece of the Seabiscuit purse.
