Aqueduct’s re-tooled Grade III Long Island Stakes takes place this Saturday. It will be run at 1 3/8-miles on the grass (instead of 1 1/2-miles), and the purse was doubled ($400,000). Going as Race 9 of 10 on the program (approximate post time of 3:50 p.m. EST), the Long Island drew a field of 11 fillies and mares along with three MTOs. In addition to watching and wagering, feel free to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!
#10 LADY PANAME (9-2) made her first start in over a year in a Belmont allowance last time out, and the Chad Brown trainee (one of three in the race) won despite a wide trip. She was also stuck behind a slow pace but still made up significant ground under Irad Ortiz Jr., who keeps the mount today. LADY PANAME won just once in six tries in her native France but showed an affinity for longer distances. Picking up a furlong off her latest performance should only help.
#12 GOLDEN ATTITUDE (10-1) was closing late but just couldn’t get past Homeland Security in the inaugural Zagora at Belmont when last seen. However, that race was an eighth of a mile longer than the Long Island and was conducted over soft ground. GOLDEN ATTITUDE could improve in her third start off a long layoff. Trevor McCarthy will have the call.
#11 NIGHT OF ENGLAND (6-1) invades from Germany in her first try for Brown. She was second in the Group 1 German Oaks just two starts ago. Her last effort was a dud, but it was over soft going. NIGHT OF ENGLAND gets Lasix, a probable return to firmer grass, and a rider upgrade to Jose Ortiz.
The play: $1 exacta box 10/11/12, $1 exacta 10/11,12, $2 win 12 ($10)
DFJ analysis: As usual, Irad Ortiz Jr. has a bevy of good mounts lined up for Saturday. He’ll ride in eight races at Aqueduct on Saturday. Of those eight assignments, five are listed at single-digit odds. LADY PANAME (9-2) gives Ortiz Jr. a great shot at a placing in the featured Long Island.
