Prince Earl should rule in Let It Ride

Del Mar’s fall meet has just begun, and the $75,000 Let It Ride Stakes is the feature on opening Saturday. The one-mile turf event for three-year-olds drew a field of seven. Post time for the Let It Ride, Race 7 of 9 on the day, is 6:30 p.m. EST. As always, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#2 PRINCE EARL (5-2, morning-line favorite) has been brought along patiently by trainer Phil D’Amato. He won his debut going downhill at Santa Anita by open lengths before hitting the shelf for three months. Stretching out to a mile and facing winners at Del Mar, PRINCE EARL proved best again. He’s unraced since that victory on Sept. 1 but is training exceptionally for the Let It Ride. PRINCE EARL appears well-spotted and is a deserving favorite based on speed figures. He even gets a jockey upgrade to Drayden Van Dyke today. PRINCE EARL should be well-spotted just off a potentially fast tempo set by #1 AFLEET ASCENT and #7 CALEXMAN.

#6 FIGHT ON (6-1) was bothered late in his first turf route last time out but was promoted to the win by DQ. He didn’t have much pace to work with but was still closing fast under Rafael Bejarano, who maintains the assignment. This is step up in class for FIGHT ON but he should be rolling late for a share.

#3 CHOO CHOO (5-1) showed some promise on turf late in his two-year-old season, breaking his maiden in his second try (first over this course) before experiencing a troubled trip in one stake and finishing third in another. After winning his first start at three over the tapeta at Golden Gate, he regressed noticeably in three subsequent tries. Hopefully Jerry Hollendorfer corrected whatever was wrong with CHOO CHOO between early May and now. Flavien Prat climbing aboard is a confidence-booster.

The play: $5 exacta 2/3,6 ($10)

DFJ analysis: Rafael Bejarano rides in five of the day’s nine races, and all but one of his mounts are 6-1 or less. FIGHT ON gives him a solid chance for a share in the Let It Ride, Saturday’s most lucrative race at Del Mar.
