The $150,000 Artie Schiller Stakes is the Saturday feature at Aqueduct. A field of 10 will do battle going one mile on the inner turf course. The Artie Schiller, Race 8 on a nine-race program, is 3:47 p.m. EST. In addition to watching and wagering, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!
#1 QURBAAN (3-1) pulled off a dramatic upset in his stateside debut in the Bernard Baruch two-back before checking in third in the Shadwell Turf Mile. The speed figures he ran in those two starts stamp him as a logical contender while dropping in class. QURBAAN should be able to lay back off a solid pace before pouncing late under Luis Saez.
#5 BLACKTYPE (9-2) made every step a winning one in last month’s Knickerbocker Stakes. He scales back a furlong today, which he shouldn’t mind doing based on his career record going a mile (11-3-2-2). BLACKTYPE can stalk or go to the lead under Joel Rosario should BLACK TIDE and DR. EDGAR lay back early. Any moisture in the course leftover from expected Friday showers would only help him.
#6 BRICKS AND MORTAR (5-2, morning-line favorite) returns off a 13-month layoff for trainer Chad Brown with a new rider in Javier Castellano. He won the 2017 Manila and Hall of Fame Stakes before finishing third in both the Saranac and Hill Prince. The speed figures BRICKS AND MORTAR earned at three put him in the hunt in the Artie Schiller, but he might be a little rusty. He’s not worth the risk at 5-2 or less, especially if the turf comes up soft. BRICKS AND MORTAR has never run on a course rated less than firm.
#9 PROJECTED (4-1) always rolls late but his 6-0-4-0 record this year is concerning. However, he was involved in a blanket photo with the top pick in the Bernard Baruch two starts ago. Irad Ortiz Jr. has the call.
The play: $2 exacta box 1/5, $2 exacta 1,5/6, $1 exacta 1,5/9 ($10)
DFJ analysis: Luis Saez has a mount in eight of the day’s nine races at Aqueduct. Two of those horses are favored (Scotty Brown in Race 1 and Backtohisroots in Race 6, the Atlantic Beach Stakes). Later on, he’ll have the assignment on QURBAAN, the second-choice in the Artie Schiller Stakes.
