California’s best two-year-olds to shine in Los Alamitos Futurity, Starlet

Los Alamitos Racecourse hosts two Grade I events this Saturday, as the $300,000 Los Alamitos Futurity and $300,000 Starlet Stakes co-star on a nine-race program. Six two-year-old colts go in the former, and six two-year-old fillies compete in the latter. Each event will be contested at 1 1/16th-miles. In addition to watching and wagering, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

Los Alamitos Race 5 (Post time: 5:28 p.m. EST)

The Los Alamitos Futurity

#1 IMPROBABLE (6-5, morning-line favorite) is one of two coming off a stakes win for Bob Baffert, the other being MUCHO GUSTO. IMPROBABLE took the one-mile Street Sense Stakes on Breeders’ Cup Saturday by open lengths under Drayden Van Dyke, who will be aboard once more. The post he drew is not conducive to his stalking tactics, but IMPROBABLE’s significant edge in the speed figure department should render that point moot. His tune-up work for this was an eye-catching best-of-67 bullet.

#6 MUCHO GUSTO (3-1) was last seen leading the Bob Hope Stakes gate-to-wire. SAVAGERY was among the competition left behind. MUCHO GUSTO may have a harder time making the lead in this one, which could result in late-race fatigue as he stretches out to a route for the first time. However, he’s trained well leading up to the Futurity and keeps Joe Talamo aboard. MUCHO GUSTO already owns a win over this course.

#2 SAVAGERY (8-1) sheds blinkers and picks up distance for Peter Miller. His speed figures are competitive, and Florent Geroux lands the assignment for the first time. A placing is not out of the question for this son of Bellamy Road who routes on dirt for the first time.

The play: $5 exacta 1/2,6 ($10)

Los Alamitos Race 7 (Post time: 6:28 p.m. EST)

The Starlet Stakes

#1 VIBRANCE (5-2) lures Flavien Prat as she drops out of a respectable third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. If she can replicate that effort in the Starlet, she can post a minor upset over the Baffert pair.

#6 CHASING YESTERDAY (9-5, morning-line favorite) hopes for a better result in her second Grade I attempt, as she was a non-factor in Saratoga’s Spinaway earlier this year. She’s taken her last two starts, both stakes, but must stretch out here under Van Dyke. However, she’s a half-sister to American Pharoah, running for his former trainer, Baffert.

#2 MOTHER MOTHER (2-1) won the Rags to Riches at Churchill in her first route attempt but left something to be desired in the speed figure department. Geroux rides the “other Baffert” in the Starlet.

The play: $3 exacta box 1/6, $2 exacta 1,6/2 ($10)

DFJ analysis: Drayden Van Dyke rides in just three races at Los Al this Saturday but is almost a ‘must-use.’ He’ll have a chance at two Grade I victories aboard IMPROBABLE (Futurity) and CHASING YESTERDAY (Starlet). Those mounts bookend his call on favored Lucky Student in Race 6.
