Qurbaan could prove best in overflow Ft. Lauderdale field

An exceptionally strong renewal of the Grade II, $200,000 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes is set for Saturday at Gulfstream. The 1 1/8-mile grass race has a full field of 14 with two also-eligibles. Going as the finale on an 11-race program, post time for the Ft. Lauderdale is scheduled for 5:06 p.m. EST. In addition to watching and wagering, be sure to take part in FanXT’s Daily Fantasy Jockey game!

#4 QURBAAN (5-1) has made two U.S. starts to date, with varying degrees of success. He upset the 1 1/16th-mile Bernard Baruch before shortening up in the Shadwell Turf Mile, where he was rolling late but could only be third. Stretching out should benefit QURBAAN and enable him to reel in these foes in the lane. He is certainly fast enough to win the Ft. Lauderdale. Joe Bravo will be aboard.

#6 BLACKTYPE (12-1) was all heart to hold off HI HAPPY in the nine-furlong Knickerbocker when last seen. He’s won three of his last four starts, all at varying distances, and with varying tactics (though he’s made every step in his last two victories). BLACKTYPE should be close to #1 GLORIOUS EMPIRE early and will be the one they have to run down late. Tyler Gaffalione has the call on this live longshot.

#3 PROJECTED (4-1, morning-line favorite) offers no value whatsoever as the favorite but must be respected. The Chad Brown trainee is 0-for-6 this year but has hit the board in all six races, with his most recent defeat occurring by a nose to longshot #13 DOCTOR MOUNTY in the Baltimore-Washington Turf Cup at Laurel. The stretchout to nine furlongs doesn’t necessarily help him either, but Javier Castellano will be in the irons.

#5 HI HAPPY (9-2) exits an ill-advised start in the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Cutting back and returning to Gulfstream, where he’s hit the board in both career starts, should work to his benefit. Regular rider Luis Saez remains aboard.

#10 DIVISIDERO (6-1) moves up if there’s a scratch. He was making up ground despite a wide trip in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, where he was fourth last time out. DIVISIDERO is 5-3-1-1 at today’s distance.

The play: $5 exacta 4/3,6, $3 exacta 4/5,10, $4 win 6 ($20)

DFJ analysis: Luis Saez looks like a good pickup at Gulfstream this Saturday. He rides eight races in all, and his stakes mounts are all live, including HI HAPPY in the Ft. Lauderdale. Saez also pilots Tequilita (6-1) in the Rampart, Pas de Soucis (10-1) in the My Charmer, and Bronx Beauty (7-2) in the Sugar Swirl.
