Preakness undercard analysis, 5/18/19

The Grade I, $1.5 million Preakness Stakes is just one of several graded events at Pimlico this Saturday. Let’s dive into a pair of those undercard races here.

Pimlico Race 10 (Post time: 4:05 p.m. Eastern)

The Grade III, $150,000 Gallorette Stakes

1 1/16th-miles on turf

#3 THEWAYIAM (10-1) makes her second start at age four in the Gallorette after rallying for place in her seasonal bow at Gulfstream off an extended layoff. She couldn’t catch the winner, the accomplished Lady Joan, who got away with a slow pace. THEWAYIAM was a top turf filly at three, compiling a 7-3-3-0 record in 2018, all in stakes. Trevor McCarthy rides this generously-priced daughter of Thewayyouare.

#4 MITCHELL ROAD (6-1) flaunts dangerous early speed, which she has ridden to a 6-4-2-0 career record. She took the Albert M. Stall Memorial at the Fair Grounds last time out beating Beau Recall, who subsequently won two stakes races in a row. MITCHELL ROAD gets a rider upgrade to Joel Rosario in the Gallorette.

#2 INFLEXIBILITY (3-1, morning-line favorite) makes plenty of sense in the Gallorette, her 2019 debut. She placed in three of her five starts against graded stakes foes last year, and two of her four lifetime wins have come off long layoffs. Javier Castellano maintains the assignment on INFLEXIBILITY for Chad Brown, a three-time winner of this race.

Pimlico Race 11 (Post time: 4:42 p.m. Eastern)

The Grade III, $200,000 Chick Lang Stakes

Six furlongs on dirt

#7 PYRON (7-2) is a perfect 2-for-2 lifetime, running strong speed figures at Oaklawn each time. The son of Candy Ride has shown versatility in his brief career, taking the lead soon after the first call in his debut, then grinding away late to pass the leaders in the lane in his first try against winners. PYRON keeps Ricardo Santana Jr. in the saddle in the Chick Lang.

#8 PREAMBLE (5-2, morning-line favorite) is a logical alternative having never lost in three career starts. He won twice at two before hitting the bench for six months. He returned to take a Keeneland allowance race rather easily under Florent Geroux, who maintains the assignment here.

#3 MALPAIS (3-1) will take them as far as he can in the Chick Lang. The confirmed frontrunner has won two straight, including the seven-furlong Robert Hilton Memorial at Charles Town last time out. Luis Saez picks up the mount.
