Sprinting talent flocks to Gulfstream for Smile, Princess Rooney

The Summit of Speed, a traditional summer staple of the southern Florida racing schedule, is set for Saturday at Gulfstream. The Princess Rooney and Smile Sprint Stakes each drew a field of seven. Both races are discussed below.

Gulfstream Race 12 (Post time: 5:30 p.m. Eastern)

The Grade II, $250,000 Princess Rooney Stakes

Seven furlongs on dirt

#6 STORMY EMBRACE (4-5, morning-line favorite) seeks a repeat score in the Princess Rooney, which she won by six lengths in 2018. She lost her subsequent four starts but got back on track last time out when she crushed the field in Gulfstream’s Musical Romance Stakes by 10 lengths. The Kathleen O’Connell trainee owns a solid 11-5-2-2 record over this course. There is some rain in the forecast, but STORMY EMBRACE sports a decent 5-1-2-1 record over off-tracks. She may not be worth the price under Wilmer Garcia but is the most likely winner.

#2 TRENCHTOWN CAT (6-1) burst onto the scene in her dirt debut last time out, opening up late over RAZORBACK LADY in Gulfstream’s Ana T. Stakes. The daughter of Discreet Cat now owns an impressive 5-3-1-0 lifetime record. TRENCHTOWN CAT will most likely be on the pace under Miguel Vasquez, just ahead of the favorite.

#4 SAGUARO ROW (5-2) is 2-for-2 to start the campaign, which began off a long layoff and needed cutback. She steps back up in class but has the necessary speed figures to compete in the Princess Rooney. Albin Jimenez has the call.

The play: $5 exacta 6/2,4 ($10)

Gulfstream Race 13 (Post time: 6:02 p.m. Eastern)

The Grade III $250,000 Smile Sprint Stakes

Six furlongs on dirt

#7 FAST PASS (6-1) could pull off a minor upset in the Smile under Miguel Vasquez. He’s won two straight races over this course, including the Open Lead Stakes over CAUTIOUS GIANT last time out. FAST PASS is 7-2-2-2 all-time at Gulfstream. He should get the pace he needs to close into with the speedy JALEN JOURNEY and ROYAL SQUEEZE entered.

#3 JALEN JOURNEY (9-5, morning-line favorite) has won by open lengths in each of his last three starts, all at Gulfstream. However, this is a step up in class for him and Luis Saez. JALEN JOURNEY could give O’Connell a training double in the two biggest races of the day.

#4 CAUTIOUS GIANT (9-2) had won two straight at lower levels before running into FAST PASS in the Open Lead. He’s always loved Gulfstream, compiling a 14-5-7-1 record. Emisael Jaramillo maintains the assignment.

The play: $2 exacta key box 7/3,4, $1 exacta box 3/7 ($10)
