Math Wizard can conjure an Indiana Derby upset

The Grade III, $500,000 Indiana Derby is set for Saturday evening at Indiana Grand racecourse. The 1 1/16th-mile heat drew a field of 11 led by heavily-favored MR. MONEY. Post time for the Indiana Derby, Race 9 on a 10-race program loaded with stakes, is 11:02 p.m. ET.

#10 MATH WIZARD (9-2) is the most likely upset candidate in the Indiana Derby. He was last seen running a close second in the 1 1/8-mile Ohio Derby behind Owendale. The cutback in distance should help him, as it seemed in the Wood Memorial and Oaklawn Invitational that nine furlongs is just a bit too far for him. MATH WIZARD was 3-2-1-0 before hitting the Triple Crown trail this year, albeit against much cheaper competition. The speed figures are competitive and Edgard Zayas will ship in for the assignment.

#11 MR. MONEY (6-5, morning-line favorite) has run off the screen in his last two races, the Pat Day Mile and Matt Winn Stakes, both at Churchill Downs. He’s only ever won at the Louisville oval in his nine-race career, and his form simply hasn’t held up elsewhere. Therefore, bettors should tread carefully with MR. MONEY at 6-5 or less. Gabriel Saez flies in for the call.

#5 FROLIC MORE (15-1) was last seen running second in a high-level allowance race at Churchill going six furlongs. He was a fast-closing runner-up at a distance that was simply too short for him. The son of More Than Ready seems to be coming into his own in advance of the Indiana Derby. He’s 8-1-2-2 on fast dirt in his career, so he’s used to picking up minor awards. Trifecta players will want to use FROLIC MORE, who gets Corey Lanerie aboard.

The play: $10 win 10
