March to the Arch an appealing upset candidate in Fourstardave

The Grade I, $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap is the feature race at Saratoga this Saturday. The one-mile turf heat drew a field of 10 led by morning-line favorite UNI, a mare running against the boys. Post time for the Fourstardave, Race 9 of 11 on the day at “The Spa,” is 5:46 p.m. ET.

#1 MARCH TO THE ARCH (10-1) will be hard to hold off under Tyler Gaffalione in the Fourstardave. He was last seen rallying to finish a close fifth over a yielding course in the one-mile Forbidden Apple Stakes at Saratoga on opening weekend. MARCH TO THE ARCH appeared to move just a bit too late in that race as he was seen winning the gallop-off. The Mark Casse trainee has done his best work over firm going, including his Grade II Wise Dan victory two starts ago. MARCH TO THE ARCH was a respectable third in his only other start a Saratoga, last year’s Grade III Saranac. The Fourstardave distance seems a little short for MARCH TO THE ARCH, but he holds plenty of value here. He should get an honest pace to close into.

#3 UNI (5-2, morning-line favorite) has run at one mile in each of her last five starts and won each time. That included her Grade I Matriarch score last December. Her comeback score in the Perfect Sting on June 29 was about as easy as it gets. UNI will have her mettle tested running against males in the Fourstardave, so taking her as the favorite seems ill-advised. Joel Rosario keeps the call for Chad Brown.

#8 HEMBREE (8-1) moves up in the event of a scratch. He’s finished second in each of his last three starts, all of which were against stakes company. Luis Saez will be aboard.

The play: $4 win 1, $3 exacta box 1/3 ($10)
