Competitive Iroquois, Pocahontas Stakes kick off Churchill meet

Two-year-olds take center stage at Churchill Downs on Saturday as fillies compete in the Pocahontas Stakes while males go in the Iroquois Stakes, a 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Derby prep. Previews of both races are below.

Churchill Race 9 (Post time: 4:53 p.m. ET)

The Grade II, $200,000 Pocahontas Stakes

1 1/16th-miles on dirt

#7 BRITISH IDIOM (4-1) pulled away to win by a clear margin over a next-out winner in her career debut at Saratoga last month. She’ll have to prove that she can handle the stretchout in distance, but her sire (Flashback) placed in more than one route stake in his time on the track. BRITISH IDIOM adds Lasix and gets Irad Ortiz Jr. in the saddle for the Pocahontas.

#3 PORTRAIT (3-1, morning-line favorite) won by 12 in her initial dirt try going seven furlongs last time out. The daughter of Tapizar shouldn’t mind the stretchout either and she keeps Shaun Bridgmohan aboard.

#1 SHADILEE (10-1) was claimed for $75k in her career unveiling at Saratoga and she won by open lengths. She steps up and stretches out significantly, but Mike Maker usually places his horses well. Julien Leparoux has the call.

#7 JUGGERNAUT (10-1) never had an anxious moment in his debut at Ellis, winning by over six lengths. He has to step up in the speed figure department, but he’s eligible to improve in his second career start. JUGGERNAUT will have James Graham in the saddle once more.
