Mr. Money can cash in again in Pennsylvania Derby, Guarana should crush Cotillion field

The Grade I, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby and the Grade I, $1 million Cotillion anchor the Saturday card at Parx. Previews of both illustrious races follow below.

Parx Race 10 (Post time: 5:14 p.m. ET)

Grade I, $1 million Cotillion Stakes

1 1/16th-miles on dirt

#8 GUARANA (9-5, morning-line favorite) was pressured most of the way in the CCA Oaks at Saratoga when last seen but still came home a winner, bringing her lifetime record to 3-for-3. The Chad Brown trainee beat Kentucky Oaks winner SERENGETI EMPRESS with devastating ease in the Acorn Stakes two starts ago despite a significant lack of experience. As long as GUARANA handles the Parx surface, the race will be for place in the Cotillion. Jose Ortiz will be aboard, attempting to keep her patient.

#3 STREET BAND (8-1) offers potential value underneath in this spot. She was a convincing winner of the Indiana Oaks before checking in third behind Dunbar Road in the Alabama. Sophie Doyle has the call once more on the J. Larry Jones trainee.

#1 SERENGETI EMPRESS (7-2) is likely to have some early pursuers in the Cotillion, but she could still take them a long way in this one. The daughter of Alternation has missed the board just once in five graded stakes tries in 2019. Irad Ortiz Jr. will be tasked with rationing out her speed.

The play: $5 exacta 8/1,3 ($10)

Parx Race 11 (Post time: 5:48 p.m. ET)

The Grade I, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby

1 1/8-miles on dirt

With the defection of #7 MAXIMUM SECURITY (9-5, morning-line favorite), the door is open for #6 MR. MONEY (4-1) to post his fifth straight victory. He’s won four straight Grade IIIs, including last month’s West Virginia Derby, by open lengths. MR. MONEY has been training exceptionally for this and drew a post complimentary to his stalking approach. Gabriel Saez ships in for the call once more.

#2 IMPROBABLE (3-1) had a Triple Crown run to forget but recuperated by taking Del Mar’s Shared Belief Stakes last time out. The Bob Baffert pupil is training forwardly for the Pennsylvania Derby and lures Mike Smith.

#4 SPUN TO RUN is playable on the “horse-for-course” angle as he’s 3-for-5 lifetime at Parx, including a win in the Smarty Jones Stakes on Labor Day. Paco Lopez will be aboard once more.

The play: $6 exacta 6/2, $4 exacta 2/6 ($10)
