Breeders’ Cup Day 1 selected analysis, 11/1/19

Breeders’ Cup Friday at Santa Anita features five races for two-year-old colts and fillies. We’ll preview a pair of them below.

Santa Anita Race 5 (Post time: 4:12 p.m. ET)

The Grade II, $1,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

Five furlongs on turf

#9 FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (3-1, morning-line favorite) will get plenty of attention in the betting off his three-length romp in Belmont’s Futurity Stakes last time out, and deservedly so. A repeat of the speed figure he earned that day would almost certainly land him in the winner’s circle here. Irad Ortiz Jr. retains the assignment on the undefeated son of American Pharoah.

#2 BAND PRACTICE (12-1) is the most intriguing international shipper in the Juvenile Turf Sprint. She’s won three straight at these exact conditions, improving her speed figure each time. Jamie Spencer should have this live longshot close to the pace.

#7 KIMARI (7-2) is a head shy of being 4-for-4 lifetime, with her only loss coming in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. She overcame a poor start in the Indian Summer Stakes at Keeneland when last seen. John Velazquez has the call.

#10 A’ALI (6-1) has won three Group 2 races in his last four starts while traveling between Britain and France. The only concern is his apparent lack of improvement from start to start. Frankie Dettori has the assignment once more.

The play: $3 exacta 9/2,7, $2 exacta 9/10, $2 win 2 ($10)

Santa Anita Race 7 (Post time: 5:32 p.m. ET)

The Grade I, $1,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

1 1/16th-miles on dirt

#1 DONNA VELOCE (3-1, morning-line favorite) is the tepid favorite in the Juvenile Fillies off just one career start. No horse has ever won this race under such circumstances, but her 9 1/4-length victory over this course is hard to ignore. Being by Uncle Mo, DONNA VELOCE should get the distance. Flavien Prat will be aboard.

#4 BRITISH IDIOM (7-2) is one of three co-second choices in this race, along with #6 BAST and #7 WICKED WHISPER. She seems like the next-likeliest winner off her 6 1/2-length romp in the Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland last time out. BRITISH IDIOM could have more to offer in just her third career start under Javier Castellano.

The play: $5 exacta box 1/4 ($10)
