The run-up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic features multiple million-dollar races with full fields. We’ll preview a pair of them below.
Santa Anita Race 9 (Post time: 6:20 p.m. ET)
The Grade I, $2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Mile
One mile on turf
#5 TRUE VALOUR (20-1) could be sitting on a lifetime-best effort in the Breeders’ Cup Mile on Saturday. He was last seen rallying for the score in the City of Hope Mile over this course. That big performance came off an eight-month layoff. TRUE VALOUR is eligible to build off that as he strings together starts under Drayden Van Dyke.
#9 CIRCUS MAXIMUS (3-1, morning-line favorite) has hit the exacta in each of his last three starts at one mile. All of those efforts came in Group 1s under Sir Ryan Moore, who maintains the assignment.
#11 UNI (7-2) has won six of her last seven starts, including the First Lady at Keeneland last time out. She fits with the boys on speed figures and retains Joel Rosario.
The play: $2 exacta box 5/9/11, $3 win 5 ($15)
Santa Anita Race 10 (Post time: 7:00 p.m. ET)
The Grade I, $2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Distaff
1 1/8-miles on dirt
#4 MIDNIGHT BISOU (6-5, morning-line favorite) is a perfect 7-for-7 on the year with three Grade I triumphs. She’s beaten Breeders’ Cup Classic entrant Elate multiple times as well as the accomplished WOW CAT and Come Dancing. MIDNIGHT BISOU has never missed the trifecta in five career starts at this distance and is 4-3-1-0 at Santa Anita. Mike Smith will be aboard the logical Distaff favorite.
#5 DUNBAR ROAD (6-1) is the most likely upset candidate in this heat. She had won her last three starts, two of them graded stakes, by open lengths before coming up short in the Spinster at Keeneland behind horse-for-course BLUE PRIZE last time out. Jose Ortiz regains the assignment.
The play: $5 exacta box 4/5 ($10)
