Fountain of Youth undercard analysis, 2/29/20

The Fountain of Youth is just one of 10 stakes events slated for Saturday at Gulfstream Park. We’ll preview a pair of the undercard races below.

Gulfstream Race 7 (Post time: 2:27 p.m. ET)

The Grade III, $150,000 The Very One Stakes

1 3/16th-miles on turf

#10 EMPRESSOF THE NILE (4-1, morning-line favorite) gets a tepid nod in The Very One. She was last seen running a close fifth in the Long Island Stakes at Aqueduct. Prior to that, she took the 1 1/2-mile Zagora Stakes over that course. If EMPRESSOF THE NILE runs back to that effort, or either of her races from Saratoga last summer (first in an allowance, second in the Glens Falls), she will be tough to handle on Saturday. Javier Castellano rides.

#6 LEMON ZIP (9-2) has four wins, two places and a show in her last seven starts, all on turf. She was beaten less than a length by the top choice in the Zagora. Tyler Conner ships in for the assignment.

The play: $5 exacta box 6/10 ($10)

Gulfstream Race 13 (Post time: 5:32 p.m. ET)

The Grade II, $200,000 Mac Diarmida Stakes

1 3/8-miles on turf

#4 SADLER’S JOY (7-2) will try to turn the tables on ZULU ALPHA following a rough-trip sixth-place finish in the Pegasus World Cup Turf. The son of Kitten’s Joy holds an impressive 10-3-1-3 record at the 11-furlong trip and owns a 5-2-1-0 record over this course. Look for SADLER’S JOY, the winner of the Grade III Red Smith two-back, to be rolling late under Castellano.

#6 ZULU ALPHA (2-1, morning-line favorite) rode the rail to victory in the Pegasus World Cup Turf last time out. He may not be so fortunate in the Mac Diarmida, but his affinity for this course (4-3-0-0 record) should play to his advantage. Tyler Gaffalione will be in the irons.

The play: $5 exacta box 4/6 ($10)
