Jolie Olimpica stands out in Buena Vista

The Grade II, $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes is the centerpiece race at Santa Anita this Saturday. The one-mile turf event for fillies and mares drew a full field of 12. Post time for the Buena Vista, Race 5 on a nine-race program, is 5:29 p.m. ET.

#1 JOLIE OLIMPICA (8-5, morning-line favorite) dazzled in the 5.5-furlong Las Cienegas, her stateside debut, winning easily with a big speed figure. That boosted her lifetime record to 4-for-4. JOLIE OLIMPICA will stretch out on Saturday, but she proved capable of handling the distance in her native Brazil. The Richard Mandella trainee is drilling well for the Buena Vista, so she looks awfully tough under Mike Smith.

#9 SUPER PATRIOT (12-1) owns a streak of seven in-the-money finishes, which includes her last-out second-place finish in the Megahertz. She’s also a solid 16-4-5-4 at the one-mile distance of the Buena Vista. SUPER PATRIOT has never won a stake but fits with these on speed figures. Richard Baltas once again names Ruben Fuentes to ride.

#8 LADY PRANCEALOT (5-1) will be rolling late under Joe Bravo. The daughter of Sir Prancealot is better when going longer (6-1-3-0 record at one mile), but her victory in the 1 1/4-mile American Oaks on opening weekend at Santa Anita stamps her as the class of the field. LADY PRANCEALOT  is 7-3-2-1 all-time over this course.

#4 MUCHO UNUSUAL (8-1) got back on track after suffering a mostly sub-par second half of 2019, finishing second in the American Oaks last time out. July’s Grade II San Clemente victress (also one mile on turf) gives Joel Rosario tactical options in this heat.

The play: $4 exacta 1/9, $3 exacta 1/4,8 ($10)
