Starship Jubilee, Magic Star square off in Suwannee River

The Grade III, $150,000 Suwannee River Stakes anchors Saturday’s action at Gulfstream Park. The 1 1/8-mile turf event for fillies and mares drew a field of seven. Post time for the Suwannee River, Race 11 of a scheduled 12, is approximately 5:04 p.m. ET.

#3 MAGIC STAR (5-2) beat a strong field in the Grade III Marshua’s River over this course last month. She was near the rear of the field and went five-wide turning for home but proved best nonetheless. MAGIC STAR now has two strong efforts sandwiching what looks like a fluke off-the-board effort at Belmont on her résumé. If she improves slightly off her last-out victory in the Suwannee River, the Chad Brown-trained MAGIC STAR and Irad Ortiz Jr. will be awfully tough to beat.

#6 STARSHIP JUBILEE (7-5, morning-line favorite) has won three of her last four starts, including the Grade I E.P. Taylor at Woodbine last fall and the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf over this course last month. She is now 16-9-2-1 all-time at Gulfstream Park. STARSHIP JUBILEE deserves to be favored based on class and speed figures, but it’s interesting to note that Javier Castellano jumped off this horse for #7 TAPIT TODAY (possibly out of loyalty to Brown). However, Luis Saez will pick up the assignment.

#7 TAPIT TODAY (7-2) returned off an extended layoff to crush allowance foes at Tampa in late December. A stablemate of the top choice, she has missed the board only once in her first six starts, including a runner-up effort in the 2018 Riskaverse Stakes at Saratoga. Castellano rides TAPIT TODAY for Brown.

#5 GREAT SISTER DIANE (15-1) figures to get overlooked in the wagering but could hit the ticket at generous odds. She has three wins over this course and typically shows late interest no matter the trip she gets. GREAT SISTER DIANE will have Miguel Angel Vasquez in the irons.

The play: $3 trifecta 3/6/5,7, $2 trifecta 6/3/5,7 ($10)
