Bound for Nowhere kicks off season in San Simeon

The Grade III, $100,000 San Simeon Stakes will be renewed this Saturday at Santa Anita. The 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint attracted seven runners, including the well-traveled BOUND FOR NOWHERE and the talented mare SURRENDER NOW. Post time for the San Simeon, the fifth of nine races on the day, is estimated for 5:30 p.m. ET.

#2 BOUND FOR NOWHERE (6-5, morning-line favorite) is unraced since dominating high-level allowance horses at Belmont last October, but that shouldn’t faze his fans. The son of The Factor has several layoff lines in his form, partially due to his multiple trips to Ascot. When BOUND FOR NOWHERE does return off these extended vacations, he tends to run peak efforts, like his 2018 Tourist Mile score at Kentucky Downs or his most recent 4 1/4-length cakewalk at Belmont. Julio Garcia, who has ridden BOUND FOR NOWHERE to victory five times, regains the mount.

#5 SURRENDER NOW (6-1) hasn’t raced since losing by a narrow margin in a minor stake at Ellis Park last August. However, she’s done little wrong since switching to turf sprints, recording a 7-3-2-1 record. SURRENDER NOW is still in search of her first stakes victory on the lawn, but the jockey change to Flavien Prat suggests she’s live here.

#4 CISTRON (3-1) makes his return to the track following an upset score in the Bing Crosby Stakes last July. Despite that Grade I success on dirt, CISTRON will be back on the sod on Saturday, where his career record is an underwhelming 19-2-6-5. He has just one win in 13 prior turf starts at Santa Anita. Victor Espinoza has the call.

The play: $4 exacta box 2/5, $2 exacta 2,5/4 ($12)
