Derby points up for grabs in Gotham Stakes

Aqueduct hosts their penultimate Kentucky Derby prep, the Grade III, $300,000 Gotham Stakes, this Saturday. A field of 11 has assembled for this one-turn mile on the main course that carries 85 Derby points. Post time for the Gotham, the finale on a 10-race program, is 5:42 p.m. ET.

#10 UNTITLED (4-1) was fourth in his only stakes try to date but looms a win threat in the Gotham. He was a runaway winner going six furlongs in his debut before stepping up in the Swale. UNTITLED suffered a disastrous start there and never had a chance to run with MISCHEVIOUS ALEX. His next and most recent start was a runner-up effort going one mile and 40 yards at Tampa behind the highly-regarded Gouverneur Morris. Junior Alvarado will have the call on this Mark Casse trainee.

#8 MONTAUK TRAFFIC (6-1) has done little wrong since being left at the gate in his debut down at Laurel. He has two wins to his credit going seven furlongs at Aqueduct, including a Jimmy Winkfield Stakes triumph last time out. The son of Cross Traffic drilled a five-furlong bullet for this and retains Jose Lezcano.

#6 MISCHEVIOUS ALEX (3-1, morning-line favorite) has dazzled since turning back to sprint distances, winning the Parx Juvenile and Swale Stakes by open lengths in consecutive starts. It’s possible he’s improved since fading to third in the one-mile Sapling Stakes at Monmouth last summer, but bettors should demand a fair price on MISCHEVIOUS ALEX before taking the plunge in the Gotham. His pedigree certainly doesn’t suggest that he’s a router. Kendrick Carmouche has the call.

#7 SIXTO (8-1) moves up if there’s a scratch. He was sharp in victory in his debut race going six furlongs. It remains to be seen how far SIXTO wants to go, but he did drill a five-furlong bullet for this. Eric Cancel rides.

The play: $3 exacta 10/6,8, $2 exacta 10/7, $2 exacta 8/10 ($10)
