Super Patriot can spring upset in Santa Ana

The Grade III, $100,000 Santa Ana Stakes is the feature at Santa Anita Park this Saturday. The 1 1/4-mile turf event drew what looks to be an evenly-matched field of nine fillies and mares. Post time for the Santa Ana, Race 7 of nine on the day, is estimated for 6:31 p.m. ET.

#1 SUPER PATRIOT (6-1) checked in eighth in the Grade II Buena Vista Stakes last time out. However, she was impeded late by TINY TINA, who was placed behind the daughter of Unusual Heat after being DQ’d. SUPER PATRIOT hit the board in seven straight starts prior to the Buena Vista, including three times in stakes races. The stretchout to 1 1/4-miles in the Santa Ana should work in her favor. SUPER PATRIOT will be ridden by Abel Cedillo.

#9 OPUS WON (3-1, morning-line favorite) is a logical alternative as she seeks her third consecutive victory. However, she has never competed at the stakes level, so bettors should demand a fair price here. OPUS WON will have Mario Gutierrez aboard once more. The speed figures suggest she can run with these.

#7 TINY TINA (7-2) will try to get back in the winner’s circle for the first time in seven starts. She was second in back-to-back stakes tries over this course, one at 1 1/8-miles and one at 1 1/2-miles, before being bumped down to eighth due to interference in the Buena Vista. TINY TINA fits with these on speed figures and lures Flavien Prat.

The play: $3 exacta key box 1/7,9, $4 win 1 ($16)
