Kimari makes seasonal debut in Purple Martin

The Saturday feature at Oaklawn Park is the $100,000 Purple Martin Stakes, a six-furlong event for three-year-old fillies. The race drew a field of 10, headlined by multiple turf stakes winner KIMARI. The Purple Martin, Race 9 of 10 on the day, has an approximate post time of 6:09 p.m. ET.

#1 KIMARI (4-1) intrigues getting back on dirt following a turf-heavy 2019 campaign. She won two grass stakes, one at Keeneland and one at Saratoga, following a narrow defeat in the Group II Queen Mary at Royal Ascot before finishing fourth with a troubled trip in the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Unseen since, KIMARI is working well for Wesley Ward, who names Hall-of-Famer Mike Smith to ride. The Munnings filly’s lone dirt start to date was a 15-length maiden romp at Keeneland. Look for KIMARI to pick up the pieces late in the Purple Martin.

#8 FRANK’S ROCKETTE (5-2, morning-line favorite) dazzled in her three-year-old debut, winning Gulfstream’s Any Limit Stakes by seven lengths. She placed in three straight graded stakes prior to that effort. FRANK’S ROCKETTE has earned some imposing speed figures in her career and will be ridden by Martin Garcia.

#4 EDGEWAY (3-1) steps up following a five-length maiden score over this course in her only career try. She’s training well for John Sadler and will have Tyler Baze aboard once more. If she builds on the speed figure she earned on debut, EDGEWAY will be tough to catch.

#6 LEXI ON THE MOVE (8-1) is 2-for-2 lifetime and could get first run on the leaders on Saturday. She has run speed figures that put her in the hunt in the Purple Martin. The formidable pairing of trainer Robertino Diodoro and jockey David Cohen are in her corner.
