Three-year-old fillies will have the spotlight at Santa Anita this Saturday in the Grade III, $100,000 Honeymoon Stakes. The 1 1/8-mile turf heat saw nine runners enter, with favored #9 STELA STAR (2-1) drawn to the outside. Post time for the Honeymoon, Race 7 of nine on the day, is 6:37 p.m. ET.
#4 CROUGHAVOUKE (8-1) could spring the upset while stretching out in the Honeymoon Stakes. She typically shows late interest, even in her latest effort where she was off slowly. The Jeff Mullins trainee trailed the 13-horse China Doll field early before rallying five-wide for seventh. That was the first start of 2020 for CROUGHAVOUKE, who was stakes-placed on two occasions at Santa Anita at two. She seems to be crying out for more distance based on her one-mile efforts, and that’s what she gets Saturday. Umberto Rispoli has the call once more.
#5 LAURA’S LIGHT (5-2) faded to fourth in the Grade III Bourbonette Oaks over synthetic at Turfway last time out. However, she could make amends getting back to turf in the Honeymoon. The speedy daughter of Constitution won both the one-mile Blue Norther and the 5 1/2-furlong Sweet Life at Santa Anita prior to her latest effort. LAURA’S LIGHT switches back to jockey Abel Cedillo on Saturday.
STELA STAR closed quickly to just miss catching Warren’s Showtime by a half-length in the China Doll last time out. The rider switch to Flavien Prat and the fact she makes her second start off an October layoff make her a logical contender, but the 2-1 morning-line on STELA STAR seems like an underlay.
The play: $2 exacta box 4/5/9, $2 exacta box 5/9, $4 win 4 ($20)
