Neptune’s Storm can spring upset in Shoemaker

The Grade I, $300,000 Shoemaker Mile is Monday’s featured race at Santa Anita. The traditional Memorial Day fixture at “The Great Race Place” drew 11 of the best turf runners in the country.  Post time for the Shoemaker, Race 9 on an 11-race holiday program, is 7:38 p.m. ET.

#10 NEPTUNE’S STORM (15-1) makes his seasonal debut off a 2019 campaign in which he won four races (three stakes), chief among them the Grade II Hill Prince. The son of Stormy Atlantic was ultra-consistent last year, hitting the board in all 11 starts (4-3-4 record). Richard Baltas has NEPTUNE’S STORM training well leading up to the Shoemaker Mile, and new rider Umberto Rispoli is winning turf races at a 26 percent clip. His morning-line odds are too good to pass up.

#11 RIVER BOYNE (4-1) snapped a long losing streak in the Grade III Thunder Road here two-back before stepping up and taking the Grade I Kilroe Mile. He avenged prior losses to TRUE VALOUR and NEXT SHARES in the process. RIVER BOYNE must be respected under Abel Cedillo.

#2 TRUE VALOUR (20-1) hasn’t had the best of trips since taking the Grade II City of Hope Mile over this course last October (four starts). Perhaps the rider switch to Jose Valdivia Jr. will help him find some racing luck. TRUE VALOUR also appears to be an overlay in the Shoemaker Mile.

The play: $10 win 10
