Golden Award out for Grade I glory in Ogden Phipps

The Grade I, $300,000 Ogden Phipps Stakes is the feature at Belmont Park this Saturday. The 1 1/16th-mile distaff event drew a field of six, led by California invader #5 OLLIE’S CANDY (8-5, morning-line favorite). Post time for the Ogden Phipps, Race 9 of 10 on the day, is 5:36 p.m. ET.

#6 GOLDEN AWARD (7-2) was last seen settling for second in February’s Grade III Royal Delta at Gulfstream. Cookie Dough, who beat her by just under a length, would be a longshot in the Ogden Phipps. However, that race occurred in the slop, and GOLDEN AWARD ran out of the money in her only other try on a wet track. She owns a 10-5-3-0 record on fast dirt with two graded stakes wins. GOLDEN AWARD should appreciate getting back to Belmont, where she broke her maiden in Sept. 2018. She shows a strong half-mile work for this and lures Junior Alvarado. Look for her to work out the ideal stalking trip breaking outside main speeds #4 BLAMED and #5 OLLIE’S CANDY.

OLLIE’S CANDY set blistering fractions but was beaten only a nose in the Grade I Apple Blossom last time out. She drew the rail that day – it will be interesting to watch Joel Rosario’s gameplan unfold in the Ogden Phipps. OLLIE’S CANDY already owns a Grade I win on dirt (last year’s Clement L. Hirsch) but is winless in four starts since.

#2 POINT OF HONOR moves up if there’s a scratch. She rallied for third into the fast pace OLLIE’S CANDY set in the Apple Blossom but couldn’t catch that foe. The 2019 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes winner will be reunited with Javier Castellano.

The play: $10 win 6, $5 exacta box 5/6 ($20)
