In addition to the Santa Anita Derby, there are six other stakes races taking place at Santa Anita this Saturday. That includes the other Grade I on the program, the Hollywood Gold Cup. We previewed a pair of these races below.
Santa Anita Race 7 (Post time: 6:34 p.m. ET)
The $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes
One mile on turf
#8 LIEUTENANT DAN stretches out following a score in the 5 1/2-furlong Sensational Star Stakes over this course, but he’s handled routes fairly well in the past. He’s also won four of his last eight races. LIEUTENANT DAN will have Drayden Van Dyke in the irons.
#3 PRINCE EARL (2-1, morning-line favorite) hasn’t raced since his disappointing fifth in the last November’s Seabiscuit Handicap. However, he overcame a similar layoff to take the Grade II Del Mar Mile last August. PRINCE EARL will have Umberto Rispoli aboard.
The play: $3 exacta box 3/8, $4 win 8 ($10)
Santa Anita Race 10 (Post time: 8:12 p.m. ET)
The Grade I, $300,000 Hollywood Gold Cup
1 1/4-miles on dirt
#2 MIDCOURT (2-1) was part of a blanket photo for the win in the Santa Anita Handicap when last seen, settling for third behind Combatant and Multiplier. But he proved he could handle the 10-furlong distance of the Hollywood Gold Cup, something #5 IMPROBABLE (2-1) can’t say.
And unlike morning-line favorite #3 HIGHER POWER (9-5), MIDCOURT has five wins in his last seven races. HIGHER POWER hasn’t been within seven lengths of the winner in three starts since his Pacific Classic victory. Victor Espinoza maintains the assignment.
The play: $10 win 2
