Collusion Illusion should ace Grade I test in Bing Crosby

The Grade I, $250,000 Bing Crosby Stakes is the feature race at Del Mar this Saturday. The six-furlong sprint drew a strong field of 10, though 2-1 favorite #4 MCKINZIE is expected to scratch. Post time for the Bing Crosby, Race 10 of 11 on the day, is 9:30 p.m. ET.

#9 COLLUSION ILLUSION (9-2) will vie for favoritism with #7 FASHIONABLY FAST (7-2) come post time, but he should leave little doubt who the best horse in the Bing Crosby is.

This Mark Glatt trainee is a perfect 4-for-4 around one turn in his brief career, with his only defeat coming in the 1 1/16th-mile American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita last year. COLLUSION ILLUSION already has two graded stakes victories to his credit, including the Grade II Best Pal over this course. He was most recently seen taking the Grade III Laz Barrera at Santa Anita with relative ease. COLLUSION ILLUSION fired a bullet over the Del Mar strip in preparation for the Bing Crosby in retains Flavien Prat. As the lone three-year-old entered, the son of Twirling Candy will receive a four-pound weight break from his older rivals.

#3 DESERT LAW (5-1) was a game second in last year’s Bing Crosby Stakes. Then he hit the shelf for nearly a year before coming back a rusty-looking third in the Thor’s Echo. That race should serve as a useful prep for DESERT LAW, who has Victor Espinoza in the irons on Saturday.

FASHIONABLY FAST had a six-race win streak snapped by MCKINZIE in the Grade II Triple Bend last time out. However, none of those six victories came in open stakes company – five out of six races were restricted to Cal-breds. FASHIONABLY FAST has competitive speed figures though, and Tiago Pereira rides once more.

The play: $10 win 9
