Dr Post can make the grade in Haskell

The Grade I, $1 million Haskell Invitational is set for Saturday at Monmouth Park. The 1 1/8-mile event for three-year-olds drew a field of seven, chief among them being Belmont Stakes runner-up DR POST and Santa Anita Derby runner-up AUTHENTIC. Post time for the Haskell, Race 12 on a loaded 14-race card at Monmouth, is 5:48 p.m. ET.

#1 DR POST (5-2) will be the top selection for the 2020 Haskell. There was no shame in finishing second to Tiz the Law in the Belmont Stakes last time out, especially with the wide trip he had. DR POST is a stone-cold closer in a race filled with speed, AUTHENTIC among them. Todd Pletcher has this son of Quality Road training well going into the Haskell and names Joe Bravo to ride.

#2 AUTHENTIC (4-5, morning-line favorite) was 3-for-3 lifetime before losing to Honor A. P. in the Santa Anita Derby. However, it was still a strong effort and he deserves to be favored in here. AUTHENTIC will have to contend for the front though, and that could lead to another late fade. Mike Smith is the listed rider, but that could soon change.

#7 NY TRAFFIC (7-2) is bound to attract attention in the wagering following his solid second-place effort in the Matt Winn behind Maxfield last time out. However, he’s raced twice as many times as DR POST and AUTHENTIC, so the potential to improve is slight. He could also get caught wide as he’ll face plenty of competition for the front under Paco Lopez.

The play: $4 exacta box 1/2, $1 trifecta 1,2/1,2/7 ($10)
