Wednesday’s Grade III, $300,000 Indiana Derby highlights a strong 12-race program at Indiana Grand. The 1 1/8-mile event for three-year-olds drew a well-matched field of 10. The Indiana Derby, typically run late on a Saturday night, goes at 7:45 p.m. ET this Wednesday as Race 11. Also on the line are 34 Kentucky Derby points, with 20 going to the winner.
#5 SHARED SENSE (4-1) looks capable of posting a minor upset based on speed figures. He was second to potential Blue Grass Stakes runner Art Collector in a highly-rated allowance/optional claiming event at Churchill last time out. SHARED SENSE won his most recent dirt start at Oaklawn before that. The pedigree suggests he’ll handle the 1 1/8-mile distance. Florent Geroux rides SHARED SENSE once more for Brad Cox.
#9 WINNING IMPRESSION (3-1, morning-line favorite) would be deserving of favoritism if the track came up muddy for the Indiana Derby, but the weather forecast is mostly clear. He broke his maiden in the slop at the Fair Grounds and crossed the wire first in an allowance at Oaklawn this winter (DQ’d to fifth) but has a 5-0-1-1 record on fast dirt. However, WINNING IMPRESSION drops in class following a respectable fourth in the Grade I Arkansas Derby. Julien Leparoux maintains the assignment for Dallas Stewart.
#8 MAJOR FED (7-2) has suffered two straight troubled trips en route to two straight off-the-board finishes. But a repeat of his runner-up effort in the Grade II Risen Star earlier this year would put him in the hunt against these. MAJOR FED switches to jockey James Graham for this.
#4 EARNER (8-1) moves up if there’s a scratch. He crushed maidens in his first route try before settling for third behind Blue Grass contender Man in the Can and Ohio Derby winner Dean Martini in an allowance race at Churchill last time out. EARNER will be ridden by Stewart Elliott.
The play: $10 win 5
