Tom’s d’Etat out for another Grade I in Whitney

The Grade I, $750,000 Whitney Stakes is the Saturday feature at Saratoga. The 1 1/8-mile staple of the prestigious summer meet at “The Spa” drew a star-studded field of five. Post time for the 93rd renewal of the Whitney, Race 9 on a stakes-laden 12-race card, is 5:42 p.m. ET.

#5 TOM’S D’ETAT (6-5, morning-line favorite) looks like the one to beat off his authoritative score in the Grade II Stephen Foster last time out. It was a stacked field that TOM’S D’ETAT toyed with that day, BY MY STANDARDS among them. The Al Stall trainee gives jockey Joel Rosario tactical options from the outside stall here. TOM’S D’ETAT could drop back or lay close to the pace, depending on what transpires early. He lost in the Grade I Woodward in his last appearance at Saratoga (August of 2019) but was 3-for-3 over this course prior to that effort.

#3 CODE OF HONOR (5-2) flattened late and finished third in the Grade I Met Mile last time out. It was still a solid effort though, and he’s 2-for-2 all-time at Saratoga. That includes CODE OF HONOR’s powerful Travers score here last August. John Velazquez maintains the assignment.

#1 BY MY STANDARDS (9-2) moves up in the event of a scratch in the Whitney. He’d won three straight races, including two Grade IIs at the Fair Grounds, prior to his decisive loss in the Stephen Foster. Jose Ortiz will be in the irons.

The play: $8 exacta 5/3, $2 exacta 3/5 ($10)
